Eversince I started working in the bank, i have encountered with so many types of customers. Mostly are friendly, patient, understanding and nice. Some are as nasty as the Communists.
One thing surprised me though was when some customers refused to let us have their Identity Cards. They would make a big fuss on why would we need to see theirs when they were right in front of you. Sound ridiculous, but I bet these bunch of people seriously need to undergo some anger controlling counselling.
Identity cards are given by the Government as a form of state belonging and identification. There is a picture of yourself, your thumbprint, the ID or passport number, your name, date of birth and your address on the card itself. So why the reluctant?
The customers who are stubbornly refused to show proper identity cards, sadly, are mostly Chinese and senior citizens. They often proclaimed that NTUC LinkCard and Ez-link are their substitute of the original Pink or Blue Identity Card.
This morning I encountered yet another nasty old man. This super-tongue nasty Mr Tan, kept on ranting on how our customer services were bad and needed to upgrade ourselves. When I asked him for his identity card to do the transaction, he simply passed me his Ntuc-LinkCard.
I told him, "Sir, this is not your Identity Card. Now where is your IC?" He angrily told me off saying "This card has my picture, my name and my ID number. Not enough ah? Do you know how troublesome it is when you lose your IC!!!!" I gave him my rude-glare and told him to wait as I went in to inform my officer about this situation.
When I came back, he was still yelling his lungs out at me. He made me feel dumb and suddenly I couldn't stand him. He painstakefully gave the wrong information of what would happen if his IC got lost. "I have to wait for a year and a half, and pay $200 for it! Not worth the money and trouble! You must must tell your manager or the boss to do something about it!" he ranted again.
This time with a super angry and annoyed tone, I told him off saying "For first time offence, you need to pay $60. Only the third offence and above you pay $300. And you don't have to wait for a year and a half for it. You only wait for a month!!" My colleague quickly came and rescued us from having a further fight and told Mr Tan to take a sit.
The main reason why people don't bring their IC around is they are scare that they might lost it. I did lost mine twice, once in Malaysia and the other in Beijing. Things do get lost if Gods want it to be lost. Some even photocopied theirs and kept the original ones at home. But still, we need the original ones to do the transactions.
Seriously, the Government should alert or educate these bunch of troublesome people (Chinese and senior citizens) about the importance of the original identity cards. The other substitutes form of ID such as driving licence, NTUC linkcard and ezlink company should alert the cardholders that these cards cannot be used as a form of identification in the banks. Especially when the transactions involved thousands of dollars.
